How to sew on name tags and school badges

January is always busy at our shop in Durbanville. Parents arrive with a list from the school and a child who has grown since December. Start early, and bring last year's uniform so we can see what still fits. Shirts, skirts and trousers are easy to size, but blazers and shoes need a proper fitting.

Buy two of the pieces your child wears every day, such as shirts or blouses, so one is always clean. Check the school's list for the right colours and badges. If you are unsure, ask us and we will help you sort it out before term starts.

Uniform Fit

Washing a uniform every week is hard on the fabric. Turn shirts inside out, wash them at a cool temperature and avoid harsh bleach. Hang jerseys flat to dry so they keep their shape. Sew on a spare button before it falls off.

Grey trousers and skirts last longer if you treat stains quickly. A little soap and cold water does the job. Iron on the reverse side, and hang the blazer on a proper hanger each afternoon so it is ready for the next morning.

Uniform Fit

Sports kit needs its own plan. Athletics vests, tracksuit tops and takkies take a lot of wear in summer. Keep them in a separate bag, wash them after every practice and let them dry in the sun. Write your child's name inside each piece so nothing gets lost on the field.

School bags carry a lot more than books. Choose one with padded straps and a firm back, and pack the heavy items closest to the back. A bag that is too big gets overfilled, so pick a size that suits your child's height. Check the stitching and zips before you buy, because a bag has to last the whole year.
