Many South African universities now put short courses online for free. You can learn the basics of a subject without paying fees or leaving home. We have gathered what we know to help you start.
Begin by checking the website of a university near you, such as Stellenbosch or Cape Town. Look for open courses, then read what each one asks of you in hours per week.
A free course is only worth it if you finish it, so pick one that fits your week. Thandiwe MokoenaMost of these courses do not give credits, but a certificate of completion can still help your CV. Keep your files saved, and note down what you learned.
Choose a course that matches your goal
Think about where you want to be in a year. A student who wants a first job needs different skills from someone planning a small business. Read the course outline before you sign up, and skip anything that does not help.
Finish what you start
Set a weekly time slot and keep it, even if it is only forty minutes. Tell a friend what you are studying so they can ask how it is going. Small steady progress beats a big start that fades after two weeks.

Good article for teachers. The advice on moving lessons online is clear and easy to follow. I will try it with my Grade 9 learners.

Helpful read for students and lecturers alike. The points on mobile learning in our schools matched what I see every day. Well done.
