Many of our students start a small business while they study. It can be baking, tutoring, photography or selling clothes online. You do not need a big budget. You need a clear idea, a few paying customers and a simple way to track what you earn and spend.
Start small and keep your studies first. Set aside a few hours a week for the business.
Start with one customer, serve them well and the next one will follow. Fatima AdamsOur Digital Marketing for Small Businesses in SA course shows you how to use WhatsApp, Facebook and a simple website to find customers. It is free, and you can do it at your own pace, even on your phone.
Find an idea that fits your time
Choose something you can do in a few hours a week. Think about what friends already ask you for help with. Test it with two or three people before you spend any money. Keep your exam dates in mind and do not take on more orders than you can handle.
Keep the money simple
Open a separate account for the business and write down every rand that comes in or goes out. Price your work so that it covers your costs and your time. A basic spreadsheet is enough to begin, and it helps you see what is really working.

Good article for teachers. The advice on moving lessons online is clear and easy to follow. I will try it with my Grade 9 learners.
