Your child’s APS score is the total of their best subject points, and universities use it to decide who gets a place. Each subject mark is turned into a level from 1 to 7. Life Orientation is usually left out of the total. Every course has its own minimum APS, and some also ask for a set Maths or Science level.

How the points are worked out

A mark of 80% or more is level 7, which gives 7 points. A mark of 70% to 79% is level 6, and so on down. Add the points for your child’s six best subjects to get the APS.

Why it matters for applications

A good APS opens more doors, but it is not the only thing. Some degrees need extra tests or a specific subject level. Apply early and keep a few options open in case a first choice fills up.
