Fatima Essop, our English and Reading Tutor, says confidence comes from small daily habits.
Read aloud for ten minutes every evening. Pick a book your child enjoys, even if it feels easy. New words stick when they are met inside a story.
A child who reads for fun will soon read well for school too. Fatima Essop, English and Reading TutorAsk your child to retell the story in their own words. Then write down three new words and use each one in a sentence. Keep it light, praise effort, and visit us in Durban North for a free reading check.
Build a daily reading habit
Set a fixed time after homework, switch off the TV and read together. The libraries in Durban North and Umhlanga lend children’s books for free. Ten minutes a day adds up quickly over a school term.
Practise speaking out loud
Talk about the day in English at supper. Correct gently, repeat the right form and move on. Our Grade 7 English Comprehension Tutoring also gives learners time to speak in small groups.

Good, clear advice for parents. I like that it explains things simply and does not make homework time feel like a battle. Well done to the team.
