Is Mobile Learning Working for SA Adults?

Many adults in South Africa now learn on a phone, often after work or on the taxi ride home. It works best when lessons are short, videos are light and notes can be downloaded on Wi-Fi. Courses that need a laptop lose people quickly.

Our own numbers at Kursusmark show the same thing. Learners who open a lesson at least three times a week are much more likely to earn their certificate. Data cost is the biggest worry, so we ask every instructor to offer downloadable notes and low data video.

What is working for adult learners

Short lessons, WhatsApp reminders and notes that open offline are working well. Adults who study after a full day need to pick up exactly where they stopped, without searching for the right page.

Where mobile learning still struggles

Typing long answers on a small screen is hard, and load shedding can cut a session short. Good courses use quick quizzes, saved progress and tasks that can be finished later on any device.

  1. Helpful read for teachers. The tips on planning lessons and recording them at home are practical, and I will share this with my colleagues in Fourways.

  2. Good insights on teaching online. Many of us struggle with data costs, so the advice here is very welcome. Well done to the whole team.
