Building a simple outdoor bench
An outdoor bench is a great first woodwork project. It needs only a few tools, such as a saw, drill driver, measuring tape, square and sander, and the result is something you will use every weekend. Start with a simple design using straight cuts, and choose treated pine or a hardwood that can handle the Free State sun and storms.
Cut all your pieces first and label them, then pre-drill holes to stop the wood splitting. Use exterior-grade screws that will not rust. Sand all edges smooth before assembly. Finish with a good outdoor sealer or oil, and reapply it every year or so to protect the wood from strong summer sun and afternoon thunderstorms.
