How to pick a case that actually protects

A good case does three things well. It cushions the corners, keeps dust out of the ports, and does not turn your phone into a brick in your pocket. Here is what actually matters when you are standing at the shelf trying to decide.

Start by checking the drop rating on the box. Most phones crack on the corners and the edge of the screen, not the flat middle, so a case that only covers the back is not doing its job.

Corner protection

Pick up the case and run your finger around the screen edge. A proper case has a raised lip that sits just above the glass, so the screen hits the lip first if the phone lands face down. Check the camera corner too. The bump should sit inside a raised frame, not flush with the edge, or the lens scratches on any flat surface.

Material matters

Silicone feels soft and grips well in your hand, but it picks up dust and can turn yellow after a year in the sun. Clear cases look great on day one and yellow the fastest of all. Leather and the tougher hybrid shells cost more but age better and still protect just as well, so think about how long you want the case to last before you pick a finish.

Final checks

If you charge wirelessly, check that the case is thin enough for the magnet ring to line up properly. A case that is too thick, or has metal in the back plate, will stop MagSafe from gripping and slow your charge right down.

Cursus aliquam

Press each button through the case before you buy. A stiff cutout around the volume buttons makes them hard to press and wears out fast. The charging port opening should line up dead centre too, so your cable goes in straight without forcing it sideways.

Once you have checked the corners, the material and the buttons, the last thing to decide is whether you want a screen protector fitted alongside the case. Pair the two and most knocks never reach the glass at all. Every case we sell comes with our one year cover, so you are covered even if something slips through.
