Designing a coastal home for wind and salt air
Living near the sea in the Overberg brings wide views and fresh air, but it also brings strong south-easters, winter storms and salt that eats into metal. A coastal home needs to be designed with these conditions in mind from the first sketch. Orientation, sheltered outdoor spaces and well-chosen materials make the difference between a house that weathers well and one that struggles.
We often plan a protected courtyard or terrace on the leeward side so you can sit outside when the wind picks up. Window and door frames, fixings and balustrades are specified for marine exposure, and roof details are designed to handle driving rain. These choices cost a little more at first but reduce maintenance for years.
