Simple swaps that make a difference

Hands placing reusable swaps on a white kitchen counter: cotton produce bags, beeswax wraps, a bamboo brush and fresh fr

You don't have to change everything at once. Swap one bottled drink for our refill juice, one plastic snack bag for a paper one, and you've already cut waste without any fuss.

Small swaps add up fast when you keep doing them.

Start in the kitchen

Try dried fruit instead of sweets, and a glass jar instead of plastic. Your pantry will thank you.

Keep a few clean jars near the pantry shelf so refilling takes no extra thought, and buy spices in small batches so they never go stale.

Beyond The Pantry

Choose a cloth bag over a plastic one at the till. Pick fruit and vegetables in season, since local produce usually tastes better and costs less.

Thandeka Nkosi – Store Owner

My own swap was simple. I stopped buying juice in cartons and keep a jug of our pressed apple juice in the fridge instead. It stretches further and my kids like it better.

Pieter Botha – Pantry Buyer

I buy for the shop every week, and at home I do what I tell customers. A shelf of jars, refilled from our bulk bins, took one weekend to set up and now runs itself.

Naledi Dlamini – Delivery Driver

Driving deliveries, I saw how much packaging ends up in the bin after one shop. Swapping cling wrap for a beeswax cloth at home cut my kitchen waste by more than half.

Sipho Khumalo – Nutrition Advisor

The easiest swap I recommend is dried fruit instead of sweets in a lunchbox. Our tropical dried fruit mix gives real energy instead of a sugar spike, and the kids never notice the change.

Make It Stick

Pick one swap this week and give it a month before you judge it. Once it feels normal, add the next one. That is really the whole method, small steady changes you can keep up.
