Bringing natural light into Overberg homes

Bright, modern Overberg home interior with large floor-to-ceiling glazing flooding a living space with natural daylight

In the Southern Hemisphere, north-facing rooms get the best winter sun, which is why orientation is one of the first things we look at on a new site. Living areas facing north stay brighter and warmer in the cooler months, while a well-sized roof overhang keeps the high summer sun from overheating the same rooms.

Where a site faces the wrong way for the view, we use clerestory windows, skylights or a light well to bring daylight deeper into the house. We are careful with large west-facing glass, which can make rooms uncomfortable on summer afternoons. Good daylight also means less electricity spent on lighting during the day.
