Training through a Cape winter

Bright outdoor sports shop corner with running shoes on shelves and a round white counter, for a Cape winter training an

Cape winters bring rain, wind, and short daylight, which makes it tempting to skip sessions altogether. A few small changes keep your training going without fighting the weather every single day.

Run earlier if mornings stay drier, swap outdoor speed work for a treadmill session on the worst days, and always carry a light, packable layer. A wet run is still a run.

Stay visible

Reflective strips and a small front light matter more than speed on dark winter mornings.

Even a short, slow loop in the rain keeps your legs ready for race day in spring.

Dark mornings and cold hands make it easy to cut a run short. Give yourself five minutes to warm up properly indoors before you step outside, and your muscles will thank you once you hit the first hill.

Gear that works

Staying warm matters more than looking fast. A buff over your face, gloves, and a hat that covers your ears will do more for your winter training than any new pair of shoes.

Dress for the last kilometre, not the first. You will warm up fast once you get moving.
