Choosing running shoes that suit your stride

Your stride is your own. What works for your training partner can leave you with sore shins after one run. A quick check before you buy saves weeks of discomfort.

A simple gait check at the shop shows whether your foot rolls in, out, or lands straight. Try both shoes, walk around, then jog a few steps before deciding.

Know your gait

Once you know how your foot moves, the choice gets easier. Neutral runners often do well in a cushioned shoe, while those who pronate more may need extra support through the arch. Comfort still wins. A shoe that matches your gait on paper but pinches your toes is the wrong shoe for you.

Getting fitted

Shop for running shoes later in the day, when your feet have swollen slightly from normal wear. Bring the socks you actually train in. Walk, then jog a short stretch on the shop floor rather than just standing still. Leave a thumb's width of space at the toe, and make sure your heel does not slide when you move.

Breaking in

New shoes need a short settling-in period. Wear them around the house first, then take them on an easy short run before trusting them on race day or a long training session. Most running shoes need two or three outings before they truly feel like your own.

Cursus aliquam

Match the shoe to the ground you actually run on. Road shoes feel different from trail shoes for good reason, and a trail-ready sole grips loose stones and wet grass far better than a smooth road tread. Think about where most of your kilometres happen before you decide.

There is no single best shoe, only the best shoe for you right now. Your gait can change as you build strength, so a yearly check is worth the time. Keep an eye on the midsole too, since worn cushioning changes how a shoe fits even if the upper still looks new. A quick swap at the right time keeps your knees and shins happy.
